UNDERSTANDING THE GENDER PAY GAP?

The Gender Pay Gap is the difference in pay between men and women explained through various statistics. A range of factors, including the measurement of a company’s workforce, influences it.

The Gender Pay Gap is different from Equal Pay, which is about a man and woman receiving equal pay for the same or similar job. Along with Equal Pay, Cotton Traders is committed to adopting a visible and fair working environment, rewarding employees based on their work performance.

The tables show our overall mean and median gender pay and bonus pay based on hourly rates of pay as at the snapshot of 5 April 2017 and bonuses paid in the year to 5 April.

The analysis of our Gender Pay Gap figures tells us that our gender pay gap arises because, of all our employees, 74% work in stores, and 84% of our store staff are female. Most of our retail roles are Team Leaders and Sales Assistants, who are lower, paid than management roles. We believe the Team Leaders and Sales Assistant positions are particularly appealing to female applicants, due to the flexibility of work patterns.

SUMMARY

We currently have a high proportion of females in our Retail operations due to the flexible nature of the roles, which support an effective work life balance. We would like to encourage more males into our retail roles to benefit from this flexibility and provide a standard gender-neutral recruitment process for all levels in Retail.

We have recently completed a benchmarking exercise in our business and are confident that our employees are paid in line with the expectations for the role, with no relevance to gender.

We are proud of the female to male ratio we have in Management roles in our Head Office, including Senior Management and Director Level, which will be an ongoing focus for our business.

We will continue to review our Gender Pay Gap on a regular basis.
