10 looks for casual coats or jackets

Coats and jackets might keep you covered in the name of keeping you warm and dry, but they don't have to hide your style as well. Knowing which jackets pair well with which clothes and accessories is key to looking great whilst you keep the cold at bay, whether you're kicking through leaves on a woodland walk or strolling through town.

Rain, rain, go away

For women, raincoats have gone from being plain to perfectly pretty. Instead of looking like practical necessities, you'll find sunny brights, fabulous florals and flattering shapes that still have all the necessary zips, flaps and taped seams to keep you protected from the elements.

Look 1:

Raincoats can be worn with oh-so-comfortable pull-on cord trousers or jogging pants, a fleece top and walking shoes; a great combination for strolling with the dog.

Look 2:

It doesn't only have to be about the great outdoors. Even if it's just for shopping, a raincoat also works with jeans, a shirt, a knitted jumper and a pair of fashion-forward pumps.

How to make bigger better

Long padded jackets are gloriously cosy in winter, but they don't have to be confined to the coat rack during the spring. Look for one that has princess seams (curved stitching that flatters your shape) and waist details so your femininity shows through.

Look 3:

Combining a lightweight padded coat with casual chino trousers, pumps and a mock shirt cable jumper makes for a casual yet stylish layered look that's ready for a post-lunch walk with the family.

Look 4:

Try it with jeans, ankle boots and a T-shirt during the spring when the winds aren't quite so chilly. It's great look for a day out in town.

Quilted comfort

The same stitching detail that gives quilted jackets their charm can mean they're not appropriate for every occasion, but they are a great way of adding a touch of country charm to your outfits. Get one with princess seams, a mock belt tabbed to the waistband and a contemporary printed lining for a fitted and feminine look.

Look 5:

For a slightly more formal occasion, such as meeting for a meal, a cord skirt, knee-high boots and a printed shirt go great with a quilted coat. Opt for a bright colour for a fresh take on a true classic.

Look 6:

It can also be worn with coloured jeans, a piece of knitwear and some fleece-lined boots for a casual look on cooler days.

Look 7:

Try a blazer with a mock shirt jumper, a silk scarf neatly tied at the neck, jeans and ankle boots for a casual pub lunch with friends.

Look 8:

Pretty in Print

Whilst the flowers might not be in full bloom just yet, give spring a warm welcome with a fresh and feminine floral print waterproof it's an easy way to brighten any grey days and chase away lingering chills. Consider what other prints you wear at the same time and, if your jacket is very bold, you can keep your outfit simple and wear plain coloured bottoms.

Look 9:

A printed coat can be worn with a roll-neck top, jeans and knee-high boots when winter finally gives way to spring.

Look 10:
