Circular crop of floral ruffle dress outfit with belt and glasses, stylish statement occasion wear look
We sat down with celebrity stylist and 10 Years Younger host Nicky Hambleton-Jones to discuss the art of dressing for this summer's special occasions. Whether you are attending a sophisticated garden party at the neighbours' or watching your niece walk down the aisle, Nicky shares her essential advice on the pieces that will make your formal style shine.
Is there one item that instantly
makes a special occasion outfit
look more polished?
“This really depends on the outfit, but to be literal, I would say a comfortable pair of heels that complements the look. They don’t have to be high; the key is comfort while ensuring they enhance the ensemble. So often, women have one pair of 'going out' heels that they throw on regardless of the outfit, but these don’t necessarily add anything to the look. All the time and money is spent on the dress with little thought given to the accessories that finish it off. It is these details that make the difference; with the right accessories, you can even turn your basics into dressy attire.”
What do you think is going
to be the standout colour for wedding
guest outfits this season?
“Pastels are set to be huge this wedding season, especially pastel pinks; ice, rose or dusky pinks, depending on your preference. Butter yellow is set to continue as a main colour trend this season. While the catwalks suggested bright yellow, the Oscars and the high street have shown a more muted, infinitely more popular butter yellow.”
Do you have any tips on
how to use accessories to either
play it safe or make a real impact?
“Think about the focal point of the outfit. Is it the colour or a print? Or do you want the accessories to be the main feature? Style the outfit around that focal point accordingly, depending on your comfort zone. The best outfits look amazing because everything is considered in terms of the overall look, nothing is just 'thrown on'.

If you want your accessories to blend in, choose pieces that match the colour of your outfit seamlessly or opt for metallic accessories. Silver or gold will always work, depending on the base colour. Also, keep your accessories smaller in size so as not to detract from the dress.

However, if your dress is plain, use your accessories to bring it alive. I don’t like to put limits on styling, but I would avoid having more than one statement piece in close proximity to another. For example, statement earrings and a necklace? Choose one. A statement belt and bracelets? Choose one. But don’t be shy about including a statement necklace, bag, and shoes, as they aren't positioned directly next to each other. If in doubt, just go for it and don’t overthink it. Remember, everyone will be obsessing over their own outfits rather than analysing yours.”
