Jeans, chinos or cords: Which trousers to wear?

Trousers are possibly one of the most important parts of your wardrobe. But with such variety available, how do you know which style is right for you, or the occasion?

To help you answer the question, we’ve put together this guide to knowing what trousers to wear, when to wear them and what to wear them with. With these handy tips, you can build the foundation for an everyday look that makes the most out of your wardrobe.

Choose the right fit

If you bought a pair of trousers that didn’t fit you properly chances are you will never wear them again. Knowing your size and choosing a pair that fits you right is important for both comfort and style. Different types of trousers offer different fit and comfort but generally the size of the trousers is your waist size and leg length. The easiest way to find out your size is to check the size of your favourite pair of trousers that fit you well. Most trousers have the size written on the inside of the waistband or on the label. For jeans the size can sometimes be found on the leather tag above the back pocket.

You can measure yourself for an updated size by measuring your waist keeping the inch tape 10 cm below your belly button. For the leg length measure the inseam from the crotch to the bottom of your leg. With jeans it’s also important to consider the raise of the waist which is measured from the crotch up to the button of the jeans. When measuring jeans; always add an extra inch as they tend to shrink when tumble dried.

The Jean

When selecting a pair of jean always consider the style that will suits your body type. Generally the classic cut with high rise waist, straight leg regular fit suits most body types, whereas low rise waist and tapered leg style can make your legs look shorter. Straight leg jeans usually do work with boots but if you choose a boot cut; make sure to opt for a less flared bottom to avoid a dated look.

Relaxed fit jeans, side elasticated jeans and stretch jeans are great options when you are looking for extra comfort as they offer both comfort and style.
